Frequently Asked Questions

How should I prepare for a treatment?

It is not recommended to get a treatment with an empty stomach. Plan to eat within 2-3 hours of getting a treatment or eat a light snack just before coming in. Wear loose fitting clothes that are comfortable and unrestricted. If possible, wear clothes that are easy to roll up above the elbows and knees. Do not brush or scrape your tongue the night before or day of the treatment. It is important for your practitioner to be able to examine and see your tongue coating for better diagnosis and treatment purposes. If you are taking any medications for health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy or have allergic reactions, please bring the names and dosages of the prescriptions in with you. It is not necessary to bring in your prescription bottles.

What can I expect during a treatment?

  • The first treatment will last for about 90 minutes and the practitioner will conduct a comprehensive medical interview and physical examination that will include palpating the arms, legs, and abdomen. The practitioner will feel your pulses and ask to look at your tongue for diagnostic purposes. After the assessment, the practitioner will select acupuncture points that will work to balance your specific condition and constitution. The number of acupuncture points will depend on the diagnosis and your health needs. It can vary anywhere from 2-20 points. The acupuncture needles will be retained for a short period of time, typically 15-30 minutes. Additional massage, cupping, gua sha and moxibustion will be included if medically needed.
  • After the treatment, the practitioner will work with you to create a wellness plan that may include an herbal prescription for continued treatment at home. The wellness plan is a guide for your health progress concerning your unique spiritual, emotional, and physical needs.
  • Return visits will last for about 60 minutes and will include a follow-up interview and physical examination. The treatment will be similar with minor adjustments of acupuncture points and herbal prescription to assure they match your current symptoms. Your progress will be monitored and the wellness plan will be updated at each visit.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will depend on each person’s presentation. Generally, chronic conditions will require more treatments for better results. It is recommended to have 10 or more treatments. For acute conditions, these typically resolve faster and require 1-4 treatments. It is advised to commit to 4-6 weekly treatments to address your initial health concerns and reboot your system and immunity. It is common that once we start a series of treatments, your symptoms will change and the treatment plan must be modified to address your current health standing. Your treatment progress will be reevaluated at each visit during your wellness planning and the number of treatments will be accommodated to your needs.
